Blessed Advent

December 07, 2018
By Julie Quamme

Advent is a period of preparation that extends the four Sundays before Christmas.  Children love to anticipate activities. Filling the empty manager with hay for small sacrifices, lighting a Mary candle as a daily reminder on the dinner table, and decorating a Jesse tree with old sacrament ornaments are all ways to help children prepare for Christmas and the coming of Christ the King.

This school year we have been choosing a virtue each month to practice and focus on.  December's virtue is patience.   Patience comes from the words peace and science and is the ability to suffer or endure something evenly.  Patience is an exercise of faith, love, and humility that makes us grow.

This coming week Grade 3 will be leading Advent services on Monday morning (Dec. 10th) in the Church at 8:30.  All are invited to attend.

Winter is here!  Please remind your child to bring their "Fab 5" (coat, hat, gloves, snow pants, and snow boots) each and every day!

Mark your calendars!  Our Christmas Concert, "A Journey Through The Nativity Story", will be held Wednesday, December 19th, at 7:00 PM in the church.  All students Kindergarten through 6th grade will be participating. Plan to come listen to our talented students perform!

Before and afterschool pick-up has been going well this year. Once again, as a reminder, please refrain from parking in the handicap spots.

If you are dropping your child off in the morning before 8:10, please have them come in the gym door (door #5).  This door opens at 7:45.  Children can eat breakfast or sit and play games until the bell rings.  We ask that you do not take your child to the classroom or to their lockers until 8:10.  The teachers are using this time to prepare for the school day.

Our World's Finest Chocolate sales has gone extremely well this year! Thank you to all families who helped by selling. Thank you to Jess Vestal and all those who have been helping count money and sort through candy orders each day! Stay tuned for an update on how much our school earned through your hard work...

Mardi Gras is right around the corner!  St. Joseph’s school will be hosting four baskets for the Silent Auction.  The theme for the baskets are as follows: Mickey Mouse’s 90 Birthday, Arts and Crafts, Family Game Night, and Paw Patrol.  With the holiday sales it may be advantageous to begin thinking about and purchasing items for the baskets now. Please hold your items at home until January. Unfortunately, we do not have extra space to store them.

The school playground has added two Jesus Buddy benches for our students to be able to use during recess time. Thank you, Kathy and Duane Binde, for purchasing the benches for our students. They absolutely love using them! This spring the benches will be painted and will add a bright addition to our playground.

Grades 4 and 5 will be singing at American State Bank on Tuesday, December 11 at 11:00.  All parents are invited to attend.  The students will be walking from St. Joseph’s to American State Bank.

As a service hour opportunity, we are looking for parent volunteers to pop popcorn on Friday, December 21st at 9:00 a.m.  This is for the students to enjoy when we watch the movie in the afternoon.  Please call Julie in the office (572-6384) if you are able to help.

I wish you all a blessed Advent season and a very Merry Christmas!
